Osteoporosis Treatments: Some Basis and Alarming Facts

When you cross over the threshold of 50 years of life, you might want to have things planned out. This could be anything from your financial portfolio to your health care insurance for you and your family. With the ageing twilight of life, happiness and rest is what comes along with it. But it has its own set of problems and everyone’s life is different. Osteoporosis is one such medical condition, and estimates seem to be showing that almost 10 million Americans have osteoporosis. This is not just limited to women, but men as well. In fact, current levels suggest as much as 3 million males have this disease of the bones, and about one-third of them do not even know that they have it, until a fracture or a routine test comes along to indicate it.

Condition of the Bones

Osteoporosis is a condition of the bones, in which the bone tissues become very weak due to the deterioration of the bone mass and density. The bone tissues become very thin, and are highly prone to fractures. Most of the fractures occur in the hip, spinal cord, wrists, and other joints.

Osteoporosis treatment and tests should be taken by a person when they cross the age of 50. More common in women who are past their menopause, a report by the World Health Organization has revealed the following statistics of the percentage of female populace according to their age in which osteoporosis is likely to strike:

  • Age: 50-59 years -> 14%
  • Age: 60-69 years -> 22%
  • Age: 70-79 years -> 39%
  • Age: 80+ years -> 70%

The above report also highlighted the fact that of all the ethnic racial groups, those white and Asian backgrounds were most prone to osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis shows no early symptoms, thus a routine checkup should be undertaken by both men as well as women. Osteoporosis is more prevalent in people who have had a family history related to the disease, heavy alcohol, and/or cigarette consumption, steroid medication, little or no exercise, and also in those individuals who show low levels of estrogen (females) as well as testosterone (males). However, some experts suggest people that they should be on the lookout for certain symptoms such as:

  • Dull pain in the muscles and/or bones, particularly in the neck and lower back
  • Sudden pangs of sharp pain, which are limited to only a certain area, which intensify on putting pressure

FRAX and Dubbo

In the past, various techniques have been devised by which a person can ascertain how much vulnerable they are to osteoporosis. Recognized calculators such as FRAX and Dubbo, based upon certain data entered by the user, such as age, past medical record, weight, gender, and Bone Mineral Density (BMD) can predict this. And it is suggested that if the risk arises more than 3%, the person should immediately contact a doctor for osteoporosis treatment.

Take Nothing for Granted

Most likely during this osteoporosis treatment, the patient would have to take some preliminary tests and medication which often includes drugs and supplements which provide for the necessary calcium and phosphate deficiency. In fact, a healthy person cannot surely say that they cannot ever suffer from this disease. No one is immune completely from osteoporosis. So be your own guard, take the tests and do not assume anything.
