Lara Pizzorno is the author of “Your Bones: How You Can Prevent Osteoporosis and Have Strong Bones for Life – Naturally” and a member of the American Medical Writers Association with 29 years of experience specializing in bone health.

In this 3 part video series, Lara reveals her personal story (video 1), what she learnt from being diagnosed (video 2) and her latest DEXA scan results (video 3). Watch the video below (or read the transcript provided) and see you in the comments below.  🙂

Hello, my name’s Lara Pizzorno. I’m the author of “Your Bones” and I’m here to share some information with you that I hope will help you and will encourage you to have healthier bones. In this series of videos, I’m sharing my personal story of why I became involved, why I wrote “Your Bones,” what motivates me because several people wrote in and asked that I do so. So, I hope this will be useful for you.

As I mentioned in the last video in this series, I just had my latest DEXA run last week. And I have to tell you I was nervous about it because of all that has happened to me since my last DEXA was run in 2012 and I haven’t had one done since then.

In August of 2012, my smart car was rear-ended by a person who gunned it to get through a red light as it was changing and my little car was totally destroyed. I was hit so hard that I was thrown under the car in front of me and both the front and back ends were completely crushed. Besides lots of bruising, I broke a tooth, over the next year I had several jaw infections, I lost the tooth, I had to have a dental implant.

In over the next eight months, my back began to hurt and it began to hurt more and more. What was happening, which we didn’t understand yet, was that I was developing a fluid-filled cyst between two of my lumbar vertebrae and until we figured that out, which took more than a year, the pain kept getting worse and worse because the cyst was growing and pressing on nerves coming from my spine.

Finally, when I could no longer sit, or stand, or sleep because of the pain, my doctor referred me to an orthopedic specialist who ran an MRI. In a week later, this was in February of 2014, I had back surgery to remove the cyst and I began to heal. But, I had also suffered damage to my left elbow and my abdominal wall. So, eleven months after the back surgery, just this past January, I underwent more surgery to repair my arm and my abdominal wall. And then four days after that surgery, I caught the flu and I was really sick for more than two weeks.

Ten weeks after all of this, just this past week, I had my most recent DEXA run and as I said, I was nervous about it because chronic inflammation triggers the activation of the specialized cells that remove bone; our osteoclasts. So, chronic inflammation promotes bone loss and let me tell you, I’ve had a lot of chronic inflammation these past couple of years.

As I’ve said before, I’m also at genetically very high risk for osteoporosis in great part because I have a vitamin D receptor polymorphism, that I inherited from my family that makes it very hard for me to absorb vitamin D.

Plus, I also have other, vitamin, what they’re called SNPs, single nucleotide polymorphisms. They’re genetic polymorphisms that increase my risk for bone loss. I have a parathyroid hormone polymorphism that translates to my having an overactive parathyroid. So, I’m more likely to produce too much parathyroid hormone and parathyroid hormone in excess promotes bone loss when it is chronically elevated. I have a polymorphism in my body’s production of immune cells. So, I tend to have a stronger and a longer lasting inflammatory response than most people, and thus I have a tendency to be chronically inflamed.

I knew that I was doing everything that I knew how to do to make up for this. I was eating the bone-building diet I talk about in “Your Bones.” I was getting extra weight-bearing exercise as often as I could and I was being very good about taking my Algaecal Plus and the extra vitamin D and extra vitamin K2 that I personally need because of my faulty genetics. But I didn’t know if it would be enough.

I was quite worried, but, in short, yes, my DEXA results were just wonderful.

I am now well within the completely normal range. I am not even the tiniest bit osteopenic.

And given all that’s happened to me since my prior DEXA, that’s just amazing. As you know, a T-score between 1, +1.0 and -1.0 is what is considered normal or healthy. Well, my T-score is now -0.2 which is well within the healthy range and a huge improvement despite all of the above from what it was in 2012. My Z-score is also better than healthy normal which is 0.

Mine is 0.6 and my overall age match score is better than perfect. Perfect is 100% and I’m now clocking in at 106%.

Plus, since 2012, my body fat dropped 3.4% from 26.5% to 23.1%.

If you’ve listened to some of my other videos, the ones on how calcium helps us burn more fat, excrete more fat and not feel hungry for longer, I can tell you personally, these studies are not kidding. It’s really true.

I haven’t changed my already healthy diet, I just made a real effort to consume calcium-rich foods along with AlgaeCal Plus to make sure that I’m getting at least 1200 milligrams of calcium every day.

And if you saw the videos in which I explain that Algaecal Plus is not just calcium, but contains four different kinds of plant dried calcium plus the other 12 known essential bone supporting minerals that the sea algae use to build its bony structure. Plus vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 and magnesium and vitamin C and boron and if you’ve turned in for any of the videos on other really great things that boron does for our bones, you understand that it really takes a nutrient village to build healthy bones.

A whole team of nutrients that AlgaeCal Plus supplies for us.

So, that’s my story. Today, despite my unhappy genetics, despite car accidents, and surgeries and living in Seattle where the rain festival runs from September through August, I am the proud possessor of strong, healthy bones.

And my goal in this life is to end osteoporosis. I know it can be done, both from the science and from my personal experience.

I hope you will join together with me, because I know we can do it. And if I can beat osteoporosis, truly, so can you.

Thanks for tuning in and I hope this information was helpful to you.

Thank you Lara for your very detailed and exciting video! I too have been hypothyroid for about 30 years, and a year ago dx with osteoporosis per Dexa scan. I started AlgqaCal a year ago shortly after this diagnosis and doing much research. I also started Strontium Caltrate 6 mos. ago. Just yesterday, I had a DEXA scan again, a year later, and am awaiting my results. I am optomistic that I should see an improvement since I also had started a better calcium rich diet and exercises.

Do you also take Strontium? If not, why not? The combination is suppose to work well together.

Thanks again for your inspiring story!

    Hi Joan

    Thanks for watching my videos!

I took Strontium citrate for about 6 months before I discovered AlgaeCal’s research on PubMed and contacted Dean. Then I took both AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost for about another 6 months. My BMD went WAY up – I had been building bone for several years, but very very slowly.

I cut my Strontium Boost dose in half, took it for another few months, and then stopped. I didn’t need the extra help any longer.

Strontium is great for those who need the extra boost to turn things around; I highly recommend it! But once someone is back into a healthy bone density range, I don’t think it’s necessary. I believe the 70+ minerals in AlgaeCal—all those trace minerals plus 4 different kinds of plant-derived calcium –combined with its extra magnesium and boron, vitamin C, and good amounts of vitamin D3 and K2, of course — are the foundation for healthy bones.

    Be well,
    Lara

Hi, Lara. Thanks so much for all this information. As you know, having osteoporosis can be scary at times. I weight 110 pounds and am super sensitive to many drugs and supplements, so I have been taking just 2 algaeCal a day and have not tried the strontium. Did you take 3 algaeCal a day? And do you continue to take them now that your bones are rebuilt? Thank you.

    February 28, 2023 , 7:52 am

Hi, Celeste! While it’s very common for Rx medications to be reduced based on someone’s size, when it comes to nutrition, your body still craves those daily recommended requirements. In terms of bone health, being petite actually puts you at higher risk for bone loss because your bones are already smaller, so the full dosage is critical. Also, our Stronger Bones for Life guarantee requires that both AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost be taken at the full recommended dose. For more information on our guarantee, you can visit our site HERE or you can call our Bone Health Consultants, 7 days a week, at 1-800-820-0184 (USA & Canada). They would be more than happy to provide support and suggestions! Hope this helps! 🙂

Are you concerned about the claims of lead in algaecal?

  6. Monica

    August 25, 2016 , 1:21 am

    Hi Judy,

AlgaeCal powder is USDA certified organic which means the harvest area and surrounds are inspected regularly for possible pollutants. Also, each lot of AlgaeCal is tested for heavy metal contamination, bacterial infection, and more. There should be no cause for concern.

How does a person find out if they have the vitamin D receptor problem?

  8. Monica

    May 19, 2017 , 12:41 pm

    Hi Virginia,
You will need to get genetic testing done to identify any primary genetic susceptibilities you may have. You can discuss it with your doctor or order one online as there are genetic tests offered that can be done at home, and then sent to a lab via mail.

I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis in my spine and osteopenia in my hips and neck. After doing my research I decided to order the AlgaeCal and Strontium Boost which I have not yet received. My doctor has advised me not to take the Strontium but she is ok with the AlgaeCal. Is there anything that you can tell me that may help my doctor better understand the Strontium Boost?

    Hi Kim,

Lara Pizzorno has written an excellent, in-depth blog post on Strontium here: https://blog.algaecal.com/the-truth-about-strontium-supplements-side-effects-dexa-results-efficacy-and-more/ In addition, we have a “Take It To Your Doctor” PDF that you can print and bring to your Doctor on your next visit here: https://blog.algaecal.com/wp-content/uploads/doctors-overview-bbp.pdf
It includes an explanation of the different forms of strontium and the safety of Strontium Boost.

  17. Sandra Fields

    October 15, 2022 , 9:48 am

Dear Lara: I appreciate your story. I need help with mine. I cannot find any answer to my question. Should I risk taking Strontium Citrate? I am 75 borderline osteoporosis. I have 2 sisters with CKD, recently diagnosed and a first cousin. So I know it runs in the famiy. My numbers on efgr are in 80s up greater than 90 and have been for several years in that range. I am terribly afraid of the strontium but know I need it. Also, my doctor may not test me often enough to catch a problem. That is another worry. I cannot afford to damage my kidneys and I read it may be a problem to have the strontium remain inside and damage the kidney if not properly filtered/excreted. I want to use your product. Help, Thanks.

  18. Brianne Bovenizer

    October 18, 2022 , 7:21 am

    Hi again Sandra,

Thank you so much for commenting again! I responded to your question on our article Strontium Side Effects are Overblown – Get the Facts, and if you missed it, here it is again:

I’m sorry to hear about sisters! If your GFR is 60 or lower, our Bone Health Expert, Lara Pizzorno, recommends you cut your dose of Strontium Boost in half, and take one capsule rather than two capsules daily. This is to “lighten the load” on your kidneys. That said, with your levels being in the 80s, the full dose of Strontium Boost should be just fine, however we would still recommend checking this over with your doctor, and continue to monitor these levels for any changes. For a little more information on this, please visit THIS article on our blog which I hope you will find helpful! 🙂

I want to reassure you, Sandra, that strontium itself will not cause damage to the kidneys. That said, we do suggest monitoring the kidneys while on strontium if an underlying deficiency already exists. So if you were to start taking Strontium Boost, and at any time notice a drop in your GRF, it might be time to reassess if it is right for you, or cut back your dose to just 1 capsule daily.

I hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out to us ay 1-800-820-0184 for any additional questions!

Hi Laura, thank you for sharing your story with others. It is very encouraging to me and informative. I have been diagnosed with osteoporosis a few years ago. I do strength training 3 times a week, take supplements and have a healthy diet but my bone density is decreasing. I am a petite lady. How did you determine that you needed more Vit D?

  20. Brianne AlgaeCal

    March 7, 2023 , 10:18 am

    Hello Daphne,

I’m so sorry to hear about your osteoporosis diagnosis! The good news is we can help! AlgaeCal is the only calcium supplement clinically supported to increase bone density! It naturally contains plant-based calcium and magnesium, trace mineral complexes, and added vitamin D3, K2, C, magnesium, and boron.

To answer your question, research suggests is around 50-80 ng/mL (125-200 nmol/L) is the ideal range for your vitamin D blood levels. To look into this, reach out to your doctor to inquire about blood testing.

I hope this helps! Please reach out to us at 1-800-820-0184 for any additional questions!

I currently have high blood pressure and taking Micardis. I am also taking Synthroid.

I want to know if I can takeAlgaeCal. I have read that Stronium is not good if you have high blood pressure. Is that true?
I tried Acontel and Fosomax and I had horrible side effects. No longer taking them. I am still losing bone.
Please let me know if I can take Stronium with high blood pressure? I have been told to take Prolia but do not want to as I know I will have terrible side effects.
Can taking just the AlgaeCal help? Or do I need to take the Stronium as well?
    Please help.

Thank you for sharing all your information with those who struggle with osteoporosis and osteopenia.
I would like to know exactly what is in AlgaeCal and the amount of each ingredient per dose, please.

Also, I take Eliquis, 5 mg two times per day. I need to know if the K will interfere with this blood thinner.

Thank you, once again, for your educational information.

  26. Yoori AlgaeCal

    February 5, 2024 , 6:49 pm

It’s always our pleasure to help, Tay! 🙂 AlgaeCal Plus has 13 bone essential minerals (including calcium) naturally occurring from the algae. We’ve also added Vitamins D, K2, and C to help your body absorb these minerals directly into your bone!

To view the ingredients of AlgaeCal, please visit our product page HERE and click “Supplement Facts”. A friendly note that because most of the 13 bone essential minerals occur in such a small, trace amount, they are not included on our Supplement Facts. The minerals that do appear in a larger amount, however, like calcium and magnesium, are listed :).

Tay, your medication is a newer type of blood thinner, and we are not aware of any interactions between this medication and the ingredients of AlgaeCal Plus, including vitamin K. That said, we always recommend consulting your doctor or pharmacist when adding supplements to your medication routine. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have further questions or concerns!

Thanks so much for your information! It is very encouraging. I will be 63 years old next month and have been taking Anastrozole for 4 years (due to breast cancer diagnosed in March 2020). My first dexascan (Feb. 2021) showed osteopenia and last year (May 2023) showed osteoporosis. My T-scores: L1-L4: -2.5; femoral neck: -3.9; and proximal femur: -3.7. I did one infusion in June 2023 and suffered for 2 months with severe bone pain all over. Now my oncologist wants me to do injections for a year. I would prefer to go a more natural route. Any suggestions on which AlgaeCal would be best for me? Thanks very much

We are truly sorry to hear of the struggle you are going through on your bone-health journey, Denise! If you’re interested in a safe and natural approach to increasing your bone density, AlgaeCal is the only calcium supplement that is clinically supported to do so!
