You’ve undoubtedly seen a flurry of media reports on Bolland MJ, et al.’s recently published paper in the British Medical Journal, “Calcium intake and risk of fracture: systematic review.”   Bolland and his co-authors claim that their review of randomized controlled trials and observational studies proves that calcium, whether from foods or supplements, and whether combined with vitamin D or not, has no effect on your risk for fracture. [1]  Balderdash!  For so many reasons, which this article will explain in plain English. I do agree with Bolland et al.’s key point: Calcium ALONE or with ONLY vitamin D (particularly the inadequate amounts of vitamin D used in the studies Bolland et al. include in their review) is unlikely to prevent fractures. We’re introduced to dairy from a young stage in life and it’s so easily incorporated into one’s diet and lifestyle, but what happens when you’re lactose intolerant and you can’t digest dairy? Or you’re a vegan? Or, simply, you’re just someone who doesn’t like dairy at all? What do you do then and how do you get your recommended 1000 mg of calcium a day in order to prevent osteoporosis and deteriorating bone health? Well, enough with the questions (from us, at least!). We’ve put together a grand list of fantastic non dairy sources of calcium we hope you enjoy! 1.  White Beans White beans…

Did you know that over 75% of Americans are deficient in calcium? That’s everyone, not just omnivores. But if you are a plant-based eater, it’s important to know where and which sources you can get your calcium from. If you are 51 years old or older, it is recommended you get between 1200-1500 mg of calcium per day. (Unfortunately, the USDA says most of us are getting closer to 674 mg of calcium from our diets) So it’s not only crucial that we get the recommended amount of calcium per day, but also from sources that are healthy and calcium-rich. The following are the top plant-based calcium sources: * Soy: There has been some confusion about soy and its effects on health. To clear up that confusion go to, “5 Myths About Soy You Probably Still Believe”. * Calcium Fortified:…

Did you know that calcium can help you burn more fat? A recent study published by The Journal of Nutrition in March, 2015, looked at calcium’s inverse relationship to fat, in other words, how calcium promotes fat loss.    What they discovered is that there are many ways that calcium affects weight loss, but three in particular that are the most basic. 3 Ways Calcium Can Jumpstart Your Weight Loss During the study, researchers focused on figuring out the reasons why calcium helps us lose unwanted fat. And they discovered that the three most basic are that: Calcium helps you to excrete more fat in stools. Studies have shown that adequate calcium intake results in two extra grams of fat being sent out of our bodies each day. This occurs because calcium helps you use more energy from fat while also…
