The Effects of Magnesium and Why We Need It

What Are The Effects of Magnesium?

A study published in the Journal of Nutrition revealed that low levels of magnesium may disrupt the body’s ability to efficiently use energy stores.
The researchers assessed postmenopausal women during a cycling exercise in relation to the amount of dietary magnesium that they were consuming. The results showed that women who had low magnesium levels had higher oxygen use and higher heart rates during the cycling exercise. This suggests that the women with low levels of magnesium required more oxygen to do the physical task. Ultimately, their bodies were working harder and over time had them feeling more depleted.

How to Test for Magnesium Deficiency
A blood test can measure magnesium and diagnose a deficiency. However, identifying magnesium status is hard because most magnesium is inside cells or in bone. Your doctor can perform other tests to measure magnesium concentrations in the body.
If you have kidney disease, you may not be able to excrete excess amounts of magnesium and you should not consume magnesium supplements unless prescribed by a physician.
Causes of Magnesium Deficiency
The most common causes of magnesium deficiency include:
- Intense Exercise and Increased Stress: Research shows that exercise redistributes magnesium in the body to accommodate metabolic needs. As you know, strenuous exercise can increase urinary and sweat loss but you may not know that it can also increase magnesium requirements by 10-20%! So individuals that are physically active and participate in intense and regular exercise, may be prone to magnesium deficiency. While magnesium has not been shown to enhance physical performance, it has been shown impair and amplify the negative consequences of strenuous exercise when there is a lack of it. One of those consequences is oxidative stress, defined as an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants in favor of oxidants, potentially leading to damage to cells and tissues. And stress, whether emotional or physical has been shown to increase the need for magnesium.
- Alcoholism: It is well known that alcohol overconsumption has multiple effects on kidney function including electrolyte, water, and acid-base homeostasis. Magnesium deficiency is common in as much as 30% of acute and chronic alcoholics. Magnesium deficiency from alcoholism may also contribute to cardiovascular diseases, stroke, hypertension, and osteoporosis.
- Diabetes: Magnesium deficiency is said to be common in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, with 25-39% of patients affected. Magnesium deficiency has been shown to cause insulin resistance in both animal and human studies. This suggests that magnesium supplements may be useful for people with type 2 diabetes to restore magnesium levels, improve insulin resistance, manage systemic inflammation and reduce oxidative stress. However, larger randomized controlled trials would be beneficial to support this and the guidelines for management.
- Excess Sugar Consumption: We hear about the importance of limiting sugar intake all the time as types such as white sugar and HFCS (high-fructose corn syrups) can be detrimental to our health if taken in excess. But did you know sugar can also contribute to nutritional deficiencies such as magnesium? Experts say it takes 28 molecules of magnesium to metabolize one glucose (sugar) molecule. In other words, magnesium is needed for effective blood sugar regulation, so when you are consuming excess sugar it harms your ability to retain this important mineral for other functions such as building bone, synthesizing DNA and creating protein.
- Poor Digestion: If your digestive system or kidney function is compromised, it can significantly influence your magnesium status. Magnesium is absorbed in your intestines and then moves through the blood to tissues and cells.
- About one-third to one-half of dietary magnesium is absorbed into your body, which is considered quite reasonable. Crohn’s disease and other gastrointestinal disorders that impair absorption can limit your body’s ability to absorb magnesium.
- Prescription Medications: A variety of drug classes contribute to a depletion in magnesium and other bone-building nutrients. Included are: blood pressure drugs, acid blockers, antacids, heart medications, corticosteroids, hormones, oral contraceptives, antibiotics and ADHD drugs. - Inadequate Consumption of Magnesium-Rich Foods. Dietary intake of magnesium is crucial and experts suggest we need to be eating anywhere from 5-13 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Unfortunately, the State Indicator Report on Fruits and Vegetables 2013, revealed that Adults in the US consume fruit about 1.1 times per day and vegetables about 1.6 times per day, which is woefully inadequate for not only your magnesium intake but also other nutrients. Why Your Diet May Not Provide Adequate Magnesium
In addition to the State Indicator Report on Fruits and Vegetables, the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey suggest that substantial numbers of adults in the United States fail to consume recommended amounts of magnesium.
Research done throughout the world shows that the United States RDA for Magnesium is not sufficient to make up for the amount lost in bowel movements and sweat. Aggravating matters more, sports, physical work, mental exertion, competition or other stresses, all increase your magnesium requirements.
The shocking part is amounts actually consumed in American diets is even less than the RDA! The amounts consumed are generally far less than enough to maintain equilibrium in metabolic balance studies. For the majority of people, diet may not be high enough to promote an optimal magnesium status, which may be protective against disorders such as cardiovascular disease and immune dysfunction.
