PABA -Para-Aminobenzoic Acid

Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is a B Complex vitamin that is synthesized in the body.  PABA deficiency is often caused by sulfa drugs.  PABA is used in the formation of Folic Acid and the metabolism of protein. We have included it in The Kitchen Sink™ due to it's well established anti-aging properties.

Health Benefits of PABA

Anti-Aging Effects

PABA slows Cross-Linking.  The cross-linkage theory of aging was proposed by Professor Johan Bjorksten who believed that the aging process was due to cross-links--undesirable bonds induced by excess free radicals that formed between molecules, progressively impairing the function of the body, resulting in aging.  PABA appears to slow and in some cases even reverse cross-linking in the protein structures of connective tissues such as collagen.

PABA is also a potent anti-oxidant.  It is believed that use of PABA protects cellular membranes and mitochondrial DNA from free radical attack.  The mitochondria are the energy-producers of the cells. Mitochondrial degradation results in reduced cellular energy production which causes numerous undesirable physiological conditions, which may include fatigue and the aging process itself.

Other Anti-Aging effects noted in medical literature are:

  • Enhanced Flexibility
  • Promotes Membrane Fluidity
  • Provides Protection against Ozone, Secondhand Smoke and other Air Pollutants
  • Alleviates the Inflammation of Arthritis

Protects Skin from Sunburn and Cancer

It is the active ingredient in most sunscreens today.

Restores Hair Color

PABA supplementation may help return gray hair to its original color if the change was caused by either stress or a nutritional deficiency.  This happens in 10% to 25% of people who take it.  This process takes several months and usually large dosages of 1 gram per day or more are necessary.

Female Fertility Aid

PABA supplementation appears to increase the ability of some infertile women to become pregnant.
