The AlgaeCal Bone Health Program

AlgaeCal Studies - AlgaeCal Research Summary

1.  Effects of the AlgaeCal® Bone Health Program on Bone Mineral Density

This human study compared two AlgaeCal formulations (one of which is AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost). More than 200 people were involved in this study including men and women from age 18 to 85. The primary outcome measure was bone mineral density and a secondary measure was safety as reported in a panel of 43 blood tests along with quality of life questionnaire. AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost group achieved an outright increase in bone density of more than 2%. Calcium studies often report an "increase in bone density", but it is never an outright increase - it is an increase compared to the placebo group which is declining. This can be confusing, because although it is generally reported as an increase in bone density, the participants are actually losing bone. To be very clear, this AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium Boost study is a landmark result with a real increase in BMD. This study has been submitted to the peer-reviewed Nutrition Journal. Publication is expected shortly.

2.  A Comparative Effectiveness Research Study of the Safety, Efficacy and Tolerability of a Plant-sourced Calcium Supplement with a Calcium-Carbonate Supplement

This randomized controlled study compares a simple AlgaeCal with vitamin D formula to a leading calcium carbonate with vitamin D product.  Approximately 100 women from age 29 to 80 are participating in this one year study with only six month data available currently.  Preliminary findings shows bone loss has been completely stopped in the AlgaeCal plus D group.  Also, the tolerability of AlgaeCal is considerably better with 18% of the calcium carbonate group dropping out and zero dropping out of the AlgaeCal group.  Publication is expected in 2011.

3.  Comparative effects of a novel plant-based calcium supplement with two common calcium salts on proliferation and mineralization in human osteoblast cells

Researchers from the Harvard Medical School and University of Connecticut, collaborate on this landmark study which was accepted for publication in an upcoming issue of  the peer-reviewed journal, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry.  In direct head-to-head tests, the scientists compared the effects of AlgaeCal with the two top-sellers, calcium carbonate and calcium citrate.

Focused on the proliferation, mineralization and oxidative stress in cultured human osteoblast cells, the study results showed that AlgaeCal®, increased alkaline phosphatase activity 200 percent more effectively than calcium carbonate and 250 percent better than calcium citrate.  In addition, AlgaeCal outperformed calcium carbonate and calcium citrate by 300 and 400 percent respectively on DNA synthesis - the ability of these osteoblasts to produce new bone building cells.

In other words, the AlgaeCal calcium increased the number of human bone building cells by 400 percent more than calcium carbonate.   The study findings provided evidence that AlgaeCal plant calcium is superior to the two most popular forms of calcium in all test parameters - the first time in the history of calcium research that a significant difference was shown between the many commercially available calcium ingredients' effect on bone cells.

4.  Safety and Toxicological Evaluation of AlgaeCal, A Novel Plant-based Calcium

Six different safety studies have been conducted on AlgaeCal in the United States and Europe and combined into one manuscript which has been accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal, Toxicology Mechanisms and Actions.  These studies include one which tested the toxicity of AlgaeCal on pregnant and nursing females.
